I sigh. "At least it's nicer here than in the wards. But I can't help but pity the girls who don't get to share in the luxury." I pause, thinking to myself. "We're being fed better here, too. Do you think they're underfeeding the other girls to feed us?"

"Good idea," I say. "I'll sniff around for any rat holes in the wall." I sniff around the edges of our rather spacious quarters, until I find a small hole in the chipped, black-and-white striped wallpaper. "Over here! I think I found a hole!"

I hold out a bit of bread I saved, smiling. "When the rats come, tell them to send for Ichabod and Sebastian. They're my friends and are sure to help once they know where to find me!"

We wait for a few minutes (or, I assume they were minutes. I'm still getting used to measuring time without the sun and moon), until finally a rat head pops out of the hole. "'Ello ladies," says the rat, in a fine English accent.
"Hello sir," I say. "What might your name be?"
"Francis," replies the rat. "Might I be of any assistance to you?"
I look at W05W. "You may. Could you send my dear W05W's friends, Ichabod and Sebastian? We need them for a special mission."

The rat nodded and quickly skittered away again. We waited until the faint scratching of claws returned and two little grey faces popped out of the hole in the wall. They both bowed in greeting and I made introductions. "Ladies, this is Ichabod," I say, gesturing to the larger of the two. He is white with a grey hood. "And this is Sebastian, his brother," I add, pointing to the smaller rat, who is all grey with a white belly.
I go around and introduce the girls as well. "Ich and Seb brought me my poetry book, the only possession I have from before the Asylum, after it was confiscated on my arrival. They were my first friends here when I was in quarantine."
Ich stood taller at my praise, while Seb held his tail bashfully, smiling down at the floor.
"We have a collection of food scraps here boys," I say, "Could you gather up some of your friends to help deliver it to those in the Asylum most in need of a meal? Rats, too, of course."
Ich steps forward and nods, "Of course, milady!" He exclaims, "We are glad to help and most grateful for your kindness."
Seb nods in agreement and they both turn back into the wall, coming back later with a small army of plague rats ready to carry our bread crusts and meager vegetables out into the Asylum where it is needed most.

While the rats gather the food, I nuzzle W05W's hand. "This was the perfect idea, my dear! Now our friends won't go hungry!" I smile at the kind rats as they march away, not even missing the food, knowing that it is going to a better cause.

I laid my head down in W22F's lap and slowly began to fall asleep, not ready for what tomorrow would be but curious... curiosity killed the cat, but we all forget that satisfaction brought it back. I hoped that the next day would teach us more and maybe get us closer to escaping.

I stayed up late that night, watching each girl fall asleep one by one, quietly reading from my book of poems. The moon was high when I, too, drifted off, leaning against my darling W03Z who was sleeping soundly curled up in a ball.
I did not wake until many of the girls were already up, and a Chaser had come in with fresh flowers for our hair. He shoved them roughly into the closest girls hands and barked at us to get ready for another day in the gallery.
